The Winning Philadelphia 76ers

In 1955, the Syracuse Nationals became a part of the NBA. After moving to Philadelphia in 1963, they became known as the Philadelphia 76ers for the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. Soon, the team earned the nickname Sixers, which is still widely used by fans and officials alike.

Since joining the league, the Sixers have won eleven division titles, six conference titles, and three league championships, although three of the division titles and one of the championships were under the Nationals name. They have been to the playoffs 23 times since their move to Philadelphia.

The home of the Philadelphia 76ers is the Wachovia Center, although in July of 2010 naming rights will switch to Wells Fargo which has recently merged with Wachovia, and the name of the arena will change. With seating for more than 21,000, the arena has plenty of suites and clubs for patrons to purchase, as well as fine dining experiences, some of which are open to all ticket holders and others which are only open to club members.

Out in the community, the Philadelphia 76ers work as tirelessly as they do on the court. They are involved in programs throughout the area that assist children. Whether it is donating time, team memorabilia, or money, the Sixers are right there helping charities promote and encourage education and healthy lifestyles.

Every month the team hosts an awareness night at home games where they provide information, resources, and activities that teach awareness about a variety of health and wellness issues. They host basketball camps, lead educational programs, and run drives to collect anything from toys to food to clothing for those who need help.

For ten years the Sixers Dancers have been entertaining fans and cheering on the home team. When they’re not performing their amazing dance routines on court, they can be found making appearances in the community and assisting the team in their community and charity efforts. The junior dancers are not to be missed either and the team mascot, Hip-Hop the Hare can be found at home games as well as out in the neighborhood. The Hare Raisers gymnastics team can also be found accompanying Hip-Hop.

For the Philadelphia 76ers and their community, basketball is about much more than just the game. On the court, the team is exciting to watch and fun to root on. Off the court, the team is supportive and helpful, making the residents of the area proud to call the Sixers their own.
